THE RED SIREN
Story Synopsis & Project Outline:
Story Synopsis Set against the hauntingly beautiful, lush, and moody landscape of the Pacific Northwest, The Red Siren reimagines the ancient myth of the Siren. Rather than the one-dimensional creature who simply lures men to their deaths, this story explores the Siren’s humanity, her lived experience, and the true reasons behind her song.
The narrative follows a young girl ("Innocence") whose sense of aliveness and connection to herself begins to dramatically shift as she experiences her first menstruation and enters womanhood. The transition is both joyful and terrifying, as she and her friends navigate the overwhelming physical and societal changes of becoming women. Feeling the pressures of this new reality—symbolized through visceral imagery such as bloody fingers, red blindfolds, and the tightening red strings of a corset—she is drawn toward the sea. There, she encounters the Siren. Far from a monster, the Siren serves as both a protector and a survivor of the challenges of womanhood, guiding the young girl toward understanding her own body, reclaiming her autonomy, and discovering the power to protect herself.
Project Approach & Additional Information:
Style, Format, and Approach: This short film exists between narrative and experimental cinema. It combines a visually rich, atmospheric style with music, movement, and mythic storytelling to express the authentic human experience. The visual language will heavily utilize symbolic motifs, such as red corsets pulling to reveal a womanly figure, flowing dresses, and red blindfolds, creating a haunting yet empowering aesthetic.
How the Project is Unique and Benefits Society:
The stories we historically inherit about women and mythological feminine figures often leave little space for their actual humanity. This project benefits society by dismantling those tropes, offering a new, empowering mythology that recognizes the messy transformation of womanhood not as a weakness, but as a source of power. It is designed to help female audiences reclaim parts of themselves that may have been lost or shamed in the process of growing up.
Relationship to the Material: This story is deeply personal and is directly inspired by my own lived experience with PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) and the complex journey of coming of age within a female body in our modern society.
